What is test and tag ? –

Testing and tagging is the process of checking the function and integrity of the safety features built into an electrical appliance.

Tests performed depend on the type of appliance (Class I, Class II, Lead etc) –
1. Visual inspection – check for any visible damage to an appliance –cuts, cracks, burns etc
2. Earth continuity for Class I equipment, power boards and leads
3. Insulation Test
4. Polarity test for leads power boards and plug tops

What appliances need to be tested ?
Any appliance (single phase and 3 phase) within the workplace that is connected to the power grid by a flexible cord and is not permanently fixed will need to be tested. There may be exceptions for equipment that is 2.5 metres above floor level or if equipment needs to be dismantled to carry out the tests.

There are many appliances within a workplace, some examples may be - extension leads, power boards, computers, monitors, fax machine, televisions, power tools (drills, grinders, jigsaws, circular saws etc.), kitchen appliances (toaster, kettle, fridge, sandwich press etc), battery chargers, air conditioners, heaters, washing machines, radio, hand dryers, vacuum, lamps and portable lights.

How often do I test?

The testing interval varies based on the class of equipment, and the environment in which the equipment is located, it should also be noted that whilst these values shall not be exceeded, a risk assessment may determine that the frequency of testing be increased to ensure the safety of electrical appliances.

Table  Interval between inspection and tests and class of equipment (without additional testing requirements) as recommended by the Australian Standard.
